  • Glad to see you on this page!

I'm Ningkun Zhou and welcome to my portfolio website. The image in the background is a beta-sheet structure of Rearrangement hotspot (Rhs) protein I solved.

I'm a programmer with biology background, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and currently working for Bioland Laboratory, Guangzhou. I mostly work on the application of deep learning algorithms in the field of cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM).

  • EDUCATION

    2015 - 2019
    B.S. @University of Wisconsin-Madison
    Major in: Genetics and Genomics
    Minor in: Computer Science
Courses: Objective-oriented programming, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics, Economy, Genetics, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry
I also played the guitar in a indie rock band I formed in college. I wrote most of the songs for our band. Check out our demo here.

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    2019 - 2020
Research Assistant @Dr. Jun He's Lab in Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences
    2020 - present
Research Assistant @Dr. Jun He's Lab in Bioland Laboratory, Guangzhou.
Duties: cryo-EM sample making, data collection, processing, atomic model building, algorithms development
I worked in the same lab under different institutes for higher salary I get at the later one.

    Coding

I learned Java in college, but currently I use Python the most. I also wrote some front-end and database languages, like JavaScript, HTML, and MySQL, for web development in our lab.

    cryo-EM

I have solved protein structures for 3 major projects. One of them is on submission and I shared co-first authorship. Paper will hopefully be published very soon.

Python is a great languages mainly because of its powerful libraries. NumPy, pandas, Matplotlib, scipy and most importantly TensorFlow and keras are packages I'm very familiar with.

Tensorflow is my first choice when developing a deep learning software. I love it for the accessibility of pre-built and pre-trained models integrated in TF hub. Check out my projects here.

Besides structures I solved, I became an experienced Linux user by working in a cryo-EM lab. Troubleshooting cluster/network-related issues is a daily job for me.

Video games are my first choice after work. I like Nintendo games the most, but I also play some soul-like games. FIFA was my guilty pleasure but I quitted playing it after college.

I'm developing my own game in Unity when I get spare time, because game development consists of three things I love the most, literature, music writing, and coding.

I'm trying to live a minimalist lifestyle, but I failed over and over again. Whatsoever, I'll keep myself away from consumerism.
